Guys and Gals: As a general rule, when you are taking *ANY* electronic items that is not a part inside a laptop, is an electronics items dutiable at 40.8%. Even iPod and RAM, HD, video camera, monitor, USB hard drive, network card, WiFi/WiMax cards, and *ANY* accesories (small printer, fax machine and Xerox copier, too!). THAT IS THE EXPLICIT CUSTOMS LAW. Now, if you sneak in by giving "charitable" contribution, or "Bakshish" or bribe, you are in fact violating the law and robbing countries progress. So, I suggest you do either of the two things: (1) Pay the Customs Duty (but beware of Octrois and Municipality Taxes. Large items can be levied excess Octroi (8%) by all municipal crossing across state borders, e.g. going from Maharashtra into Karnataka or Gujarat, and likewise) (2) Buy items in India. I know that the high-end items may or may not be available in other cities other than Mumbai, Bengaluru, New Delhi, Kolkata or Chennai such as 1080p hi-def screen or HD camcorder or PS3/Wii, but it will give you a peace of mind not getting into trouble with archaic rules and laws of India. This allows stupid-yet-corrupted Customs Offficer to jack out couple of hunderd dollars or pounds of you. *Believe me* I was once harrassed for two sweaters that were valued each at $50, but then they went into pricing everything. I had excess of some Rs. 1700 worth, which I paid a tax of 42%. The Customs Officer was begging me to not to pay the customs -- just give him dollars will suffice the acknowledgement of "having paid" customs. They use a "doosari copy" for such purpose. But, in reality you get in local police detention for defrauding Indian Customs Officer. It is my experience that having known high level Customs Officers and people in Home Ministries, I think it is better to travel light...control your eagerness and enthusiasm. Once inside India, take family members to lavish purchases.say in Nariman Point/Mumbai or in Bengaluru's posh districts. There are tax paying companies that manage all the troubles for you with having proper license etc...All you may end up paying 5-10% more sans grief.

Anonymous said...

All electronic items are levied 40.8% Customs Duty if you plan to leave the item for loved ones in India, unless they are inside a laptop.

External HD, additional external RAM HD, separate web camera, external mouse, game card, video card, sound card, iPod, Zune, Creative Sansa (personal MP3\Video players). The Customs bandits are especially sensitive to digital photography equipments of any kind.

Also, you cannot carry more that 10DVD titles without arousing interest by the customs goonda (Anti-piracy law).

You CAN take inside India any electronics items for valid use by you *ONLY IF* you declare in *RED CHANNEL* AND *GET IMPORT CERTIFICATE*. MAKE sure you have the Certificate and the item when you leave India. This way you *DO NOT* have to pay *ANY* Customs Duty.

I am planning to import a LCD TV to India with cost of 1500 AUD (Australian dollars). Consider the cost in rs 75000.
I know I need to pay customs duty of 36.05 % of amount exceeding 25000 rs. So I would be charged duty of 36.05 % of 50000 (i.e 75000 - 25000).
I need to clarify my understanding of customs duty calculation.

Is above custom duty calculation correct?
